I don’t want to find out that my favorite quarterback of all time is nothing but a grifter. If it is proven (and it’s not looking good) that Brett took money intended for the poorest people of Mississippi. He deserves a fate worse than Pete Rose, though I know that won’t happen with regards to football. The criminal justice system may be a different story.
I am from one of the poorest counties in one of the poorest states in the country. Anybody who steals from the hard working people of the rural South has no soul. Is that Brett Favre? Very possibly. If proven guilty, I hope the consequences are significant enough to make Brett one of the poorest people in Mississippi.
This Brett Favre scandal is like your grandmother walking out in front of the whole family naked at Thanksgiving. Nobody wants to see this, nobody is sure what to do, but you darn sure can’t ignore it. It is the last thing you want to have to deal with, but there it is, causing discomfort at a level that even your proctologist can’t match.
I am not often guilty of hero worship of athletes, but now I’ve been burned twice. The witch hunt they launched against Lance Armstrong found witches, lots of them. Lance Armstrong was not who we thought he was and he brought down a lot of the cycling community when he was found to be a cheater. Brett Favre is not accused of cheating at sports, he’s accused of being a horrible human being. It is a whole different level of disappointment.
Brett, hire a good lawyer and try to avoid jail (though you probably deserve it). Spend the rest of your life working to repay the people you took advantage of. Make it right. You can’t make it go away so make it right. The people of Mississippi love you and I’m sure they want to forgive you - I want to forgive you, but you need to own the wrong and make it right.
